Ruth Roman (n e Gold) was born in Lynn in Massachusetts. Her parents were Lithuanian Jews Mary Pauline and Abraham Roman. When she was a young girl, Roman's carnival-barker father died in a tragic way, which forced her mother, Mary Pauline (Gold), to become a waitress or cleaner so that they could survive. Ruth was a student at the school located in Boston's tenement region, which was the most deplorable. Following only two school years the young woman left to pursue an acting profession. Her journey was not without obstacles. the path she chose to pursue. In New York she was hired to take photos for a publication about crime and drama, however no theater opportunities were offered. Then, she worked as an hat-checker at an evening club, before deciding to call the shots and moving back to Boston. There she earned a living as an usherette by during the day and then at night performed with the New England Repertory Company. It was her first role as an actor. Drama studies led her to earn her degree at Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
